New research reveals just how much plastic your sponge leaves behind — and what to use instead


There's something sitting by your kitchen sink right now that most of us have never questioned. It cleans our dishes, wipes our surfaces, and gets used multiple times a day. But according to a peer-reviewed study published in 2026, that ordinary kitchen sponge could be releasing up to 4.2 grams of microplastics into your wastewater every single year.

That might not sound like much. But scale it across an entire country, and it amounts to hundreds of tonnes of plastic entering our water systems annually — plastic that doesn't break down, that passes through most water treatment processes, and that works its way into rivers, soil, and eventually the food chain.

What the research actually found

Scientists at the University of Bonn and Leiden University conducted one of the most thorough studies of kitchen sponge microplastic release to date, combining real household use data from volunteers with controlled laboratory experiments.

They tested three sponge types: a conventional European sponge, a conventional North American sponge, and an organic sponge with significantly lower plastic content. The results were striking.

The conventional European sponge — the type most commonly found in UK supermarkets — had a plastic content of 59.3% and released the most microplastics by far: up to 4.2 grams per person per year into the wastewater system. The organic sponge, with just 15.9% plastic content, released around six times less.

Even with wastewater treatment plants retaining roughly 90% of microplastics, the remaining particles still reach freshwater. The plastics captured in treatment sludge don't simply disappear either — in many countries, that sludge is applied to agricultural land, meaning microplastics find their way into soil and, eventually, into our food.

Microplastics have now been found in human blood, breast milk, and lung tissue. On a cellular level, research suggests they can cause oxidative stress and affect gene expression. The digestive, respiratory, endocrine, and immune systems have all been flagged as potentially vulnerable — particularly in developing bodies.
