Not everything has to be bamboo: where recycled plastic fits in a plastic-free home

There's a shortcut most of us use when we're standing in a shop trying to make a better choice. We look at what the thing is made of. Bamboo, good. Plastic, bad. It takes half a second, it feels responsible, and most of the time it's roughly right.

It's also the reason a lot of genuinely poor products end up in genuinely well-meaning homes.

We've spent the last year vetting brands for EcoElara, and the thing that has surprised us most isn't the greenwashing on the obvious offenders. It's how often the material on the label tells you almost nothing about the impact of the product. So this is our attempt to set out what we actually look at, why we say no to most things, and where after a lot of deliberation  recycled plastic fits into a range built around plastic-free living.

Why "what is it made of?" is the wrong first question

Material is one input into a product's footprint. It's rarely the biggest one.

Across published lifecycle assessments of household goods, the factor that most consistently determines environmental outcome isn't the material at all. It's how long the thing lasts before it's replaced. A product used for three years carries a fraction of the per-use impact of one replaced every few months, almost regardless of what either is made from. Buying a better tool and keeping it longer beats buying something labelled eco and replacing it twice a year.

Which means a bamboo product that warps, splits and gets binned inside twelve months can carry a heavier footprint than a synthetic one still working after five. That's uncomfortable, and it's the sort of thing eco retailers tend not to mention.

Once you accept that, the question changes. Instead of what is this made of, it becomes what does this thing have to survive, and what's the best material for that job.

The four questions we ask of any product

These are what our vetting actually comes down to.

1. Does it touch you, your food, or your water? This is the first filter and the strictest one. A brush that scrubs your pans, a cloth that wipes your surfaces, a detergent that soaks into your clothes, a bar that touches your skin -  anything in this category is a route into your body and into your wastewater. Synthetic materials in this category shed. Kitchen sponges have been estimated to release measurable quantities of microplastics daily under normal use, and those particles go onto your plates and down your drain.

Nothing plastic goes into our washing-up tools, our laundry range, or our personal care. Not a bristle, not a fibre, not a formulation. That line doesn't move, and no argument about lifecycle carbon changes it.

2. How many steps does it take to make? This is the one most people never count. Take a bamboo storage caddy. The bamboo is grown, harvested, washed, dried, cut, bound - usually with an adhesive or resin - pressed, coated, boxed, and then shipped from Asia to a UK warehouse. Ten stages and most of the way around the planet before it reaches your sink.

Now take a product made from plastic that already exists in this country. The material is collected as commercial waste, sorted, cleaned, pelletised and moulded. No growing, no felling, no ocean freight.

We can't put a single number on that comparison, and we're not going to invent one. But counting the steps changes the intuition, and it should.

3. What happens at the end? Natural fibres break down into organic matter. Synthetic ones fragment into smaller and smaller pieces of plastic that persist. That's a genuine, permanent difference and it's why our contact products are natural fibre without exception.

But "recyclable" and "biodegradable" both come with asterisks. Bamboo bound in resin doesn't compost. Recyclable plastic only gets recycled if your council accepts it. The honest question is what realistically happens to this object in a normal household, not what's theoretically possible.

4. Is anyone willing to show their working? The most reliable signal we've found isn't a certification. It's whether a supplier will answer a hard question with a straight answer, including when the answer is "we don't know."

Where bamboo's story gets complicated

We stock plenty of natural fibre. We're not anti-bamboo. But it's worth knowing that the word does a lot of work it hasn't earned.

A large proportion of what's sold as bamboo homeware isn't solid bamboo. It's bamboo powder or fibre used as a filler, bound in melamine-formaldehyde resin which is a plastic, and one that doesn't biodegrade. This isn't a fringe concern: the EU banned these composites for food-contact use in 2021 after migration testing, and a 2025 study looking at products labelled as bamboo found melamine present in twenty of twenty-one samples tested.

Those rules cover food-contact items, so they don't apply to a storage caddy or a bathroom tidy. But the material question still stands. If you're choosing bamboo specifically to avoid plastic, it's worth asking what's holding it together.

To bamboo's credit, and this deserves saying plainly: it grows extremely fast and absorbs carbon while it does. Solid, untreated, FSC-certified bamboo with no resin binder is an excellent material. The problem is that a lot of what's on the shelf isn't that, and the packaging won't tell you.

Where recycled plastic earns a place

Which brings us to the exception in our range, and how we got there.

We wanted a sink tidy. Something to hold the brushes and the soap by the sink, keep it all draining, and stop the worktop looking like a building site. We looked for a bamboo one first and spent a long time doing it. But a sink tidy sits in standing water, holds wet things, and gets knocked about daily. Nothing natural we found would survive that for more than a year, and a product that reaches landfill inside twelve months isn't sustainable. It just photographs as though it is.

So we asked ReBorn a lot of questions instead, and got straight answers to every one.

Their Sink Tidy's plastic components are 100% recycled polypropylene, with only a small amount of colour added. The recycled polymer comes through Biffa from UK commercial and industrial waste streams, and the parts are injection moulded at ReBorn's own factory in Wiltshire. British waste, British factory. They've worked with Brunel University London on impact and drop testing, weather resistance and dishwasher suitability. The components separate at end of life so they can be repaired, reused or recycled, and ReBorn will advise on taking products back.

Their lifecycle assessment, also conducted with Brunel, found this UK recycled-material and manufacturing model delivers a 79% reduction in lifecycle carbon emissions compared with comparable products manufactured in the Far East from virgin plastic. We'll always quote that comparison in full, because the comparator is the claim. It isn't a comparison against bamboo, and we won't present it as one.

What actually convinced us was what they wouldn't say. We asked about scratch resistance and expected lifespan. Rather than supply a marketing number, they told us they don't make a quantified abrasion claim and didn't want to overstate it, and that lifespan depends on use and care. Suppliers who are willing to lose a sale rather than exaggerate are the ones worth stocking.

Where recycled plastic still isn't good enough

It isn't a universal answer, and we'd rather say so than let one good product become a policy.

Recycled polypropylene is still plastic. Abrade it and it will shed, which is precisely why it has no place in a scrubbing tool. It can't be recycled indefinitely as polymer quality degrades with each pass, so a recycled product is a long detour rather than a closed loop. And whether it's accepted in your kerbside collection depends entirely on your council.

So recycled plastic sits in one narrow band of our range: things that carry, hold or store, where durability is the point and nothing abrades. Not brushes. Not cloths. Not anything that goes near your skin.

The order we'd actually put it in

If you want the whole thing as a hierarchy, this is roughly how we think:

  1. Don't buy it. The lowest-impact product is the one you didn't need.
  2. Keep what you already own until it genuinely fails, whatever it's made of. Replacing a working plastic item with a natural one is usually a net loss.
  3. Natural fibre for anything that touches you, your food or your water brushes, cloths, scourers, soaps, detergents. No exceptions.
  4. Recycled material for things that carry, hold or store, where durability decides the outcome and nothing sheds.

What this means when you're shopping

Look past the material and ask three things. What does this have to survive? How far did it travel and how many stages did it take to make? And will the brand tell you what's actually in it  including the binder, the coating and the adhesive?

Words like natural, green and eco have no legal definition in UK advertising. They're marketing language. Third-party certification and a supplier willing to answer awkward questions are worth more than any of them.

That's the whole job we've given ourselves. Not picking the material that looks greenest in a photograph, but doing the work on each product and telling you honestly what we found including when the answer surprised us.

The label says eco. We check if it means it. Including our own.
