The standard yellow-and-green sponge is one of the most replaced items in the average kitchen, and one of the most overlooked sources of plastic in the home. Most conventional sponges are made from polyurethane foam and synthetic fibres. Every time you scrub, tiny plastic particles go down your drain. When the sponge wears out - usually within a few weeks - the whole thing goes to landfill.
These are different.
Made from coconut fibre and cellulose, these plant-based sponge scourers do everything your usual washing up sponge does, and they do it without the synthetic materials you'd rather not have near your food, your surfaces, or your drains.
I chose these for EcoElara because they work. Not just in theory, but at the sink, where it actually counts. The cellulose sponge side wipes, absorbs, and lifts everyday residue. The coconut fibre scourer side handles the tougher jobs - baked-on food, stubborn grease, and anything that needs a bit more effort- without scratching surfaces.
You get six in a pack, so they'll see you through a good stretch of everyday kitchen use, with extras for the bathroom or anywhere else in the house that needs a regular wipe-down.
It's a small swap. But it's one of the easiest plastic-free kitchen changes you can make, and at six per pack, the barrier to trying them is about as low as it gets.
Why I chose these for EcoElara
- Plant-based materials - coconut fibre and cellulose, not polyurethane foam or synthetic plastic
- Two-sided for real versatility - sponge side for wiping and absorbing, scourer side for tougher residue
- No microplastic shedding - unlike conventional synthetic scourers
- Pack of 6 - great value, and enough to keep one in the kitchen and spare a couple for bathroom or general use
- Works on dishes, bowls, pans, worktops, hobs, bathroom surfaces, and everyday spills
- A practical lower-waste swap - same job, better materials
How to use
Wet the sponge before use. Use the soft cellulose side for general wiping, cleaning, and liquid spills. Flip to the coconut fibre scourer side for food residue, grease, or anything that needs more effort. Rinse thoroughly after each use and leave to air dry in a well-ventilated area, this helps each sponge last as long as possible.

These scourers are plant-based but not compostable in the same way as the SEEP Eco Sponge Scourers. Dispose with general household waste when worn. For a fully compostable option, the SEEP scourers are also available in this collection.
