The SEEP Eco Sponge Scourer combines an absorbent cellulose sponge with a natural loofah scrubbing layer for everyday washing-up and wiping. It contains no plastic sponge or synthetic scourer material, so it won't shed the microplastics associated with conventional plastic-based sponges.

Why we stock this
We looked at what conventional washing-up sponges are actually made from. Many rely on synthetic foam and plastic scourer fibres, which wear down during use.
The SEEP sponge takes a different approach: the absorbent section is cellulose and the scrubbing surface is natural loofah, joined with cotton rather that a synthetic scourer layer. SEEP also confirms that the sponge is home compostable at the end of its useful life.
We alo checked the less obvious details. The product is manufactured in China rather than the UK, and SEEP says its production uses audited factories. There is currently no recognised industry accreditation specifically for sustainable, loofah, something SEEP itself acknowledges while it works to verify its sourcing.
What it's made of

Cotton - used to sew the two section together; SEEP's listed specification also refers to an organic cotton label.

How to care for it
- Rinse thoroughly after use.
- Squeeze out excess water
- Allow the sponge to dry properly between uses.
- To freshen it, SEEP says it can be washed in a washing machine at around 30-40 degrees centigrade, or placed on the top shelf of a dishwasher.
- Expect the loofah to soften and eventually begin breaking down with repeated washing - that is part of the nature of compostable material.
End of life
Once the sponge is worn out, cut it into smaller pieces and add it to your home compost. Cutting it up helps break down more quickly. If home composting isn't available, dispose of it with your household waste.
Packaging
SEEP states that its packaging comes from FSC sources. Recyclable with natural inks.
